Day 5 of the World Athletics Level 1 Practical Coaching Course. A Powerful Night Focused on Shot Put 🇦🇼

November 11, 2025

Day 5 of the World Athletics Level 1 Practical Coaching Course took place at the GPT Stadium, where participants dedicated the evening to mastering one of athletics’ most powerful and technical events, the shot put.

Under the expert guidance of Mr. Roy Thomas from Jamaica, a certified World Athletics Trainer, and Assistant Trainer Mr. Peter Simon from Aruba, the participants explored both the linear (glide) and rotational techniques used in the shot put. These two methods, while sharing the same goal, require different movement patterns, rhythm and body coordination to achieve maximum distance with accuracy.

Both techniques were studied and practiced through the four fundamental phases: Preparation, Momentum Building, Delivery and Recovery. Each phase is crucial in developing a smooth and efficient throw, with proper balance and energy transfer.

During the linear technique (glide) sessions, the group focused on foot placement, leg drive, body alignment and arm movement, emphasizing the importance of control and explosive power through the throwing circle.
The rotational technique introduced participants to a more dynamic and complex movement pattern, rotating across the circle to generate angular momentum and convert it into a powerful release. This required careful attention to rhythm, balance and timing, as explained and demonstrated by Mr. Roy.

Throughout the evening, the participants showed great enthusiasm and discipline, actively applying what they had learned from earlier theory sessions into practical execution on the field. The environment at the GPT Stadium was filled with energy, teamwork and motivation, reflecting the growing confidence and capability of the group.

It was a night full of valuable information, technical insights and hands-on experience, reinforcing the importance of both precision and understanding in the art of coaching.

Each day of this course brings our participants closer to becoming World Athletics Level 1 Certified Coaches and the Aruba Athletic Federation is proud to witness their dedication and growth throughout this journey. 🇦🇼💪🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️✨
