Day 7 of the World Athletics Level 1 Practical Coaching Course was marked by both inspiration and intensive learning. We were honored with a special visit from the Minister of Kingdom Relations, Education, Youth, Innovation & Sports, Mrs. Gerlien Croes, who took time out of her schedule to meet with our participants.
Minister Croes shared uplifting words about the importance of investing in coaching education, strengthening the foundation for Aruba’s athletes and continuing to elevate sports development on the island. Her motivational message reminded everyone of the responsibility and pride that comes with shaping our future generation of athletes. Her visit energized the group and added great value to today’s session.
Focus of the Day: Middle Distance, Long Distance & Race Walking
Following the minister’s visit, the course continued with a full practical session on Middle Distance, Long Distance and Race Walking. Three endurance disciplines where technique and efficiency are essential.
⭐ Middle & Long Distance Running
Participants explored the technical fundamentals that every coach must understand:
-
Correct running posture
-
Efficient foot placement
-
Relaxed coordination of arms and legs
The emphasis was on coaching athletes to move smoothly, economically and with proper alignment to avoid injuries and maximize endurance.
⭐ Race Walking Technique
The session then shifted to the unique demands of Race Walking, where participants learned:
-
The difference between single support and double support
-
How the foot must land with full heel contact
-
Maintaining a straightened knee from heel contact until the body passes over the leg
-
Proper hip rotation to create stride length without breaking rules
-
The role of strong yet relaxed arm movement to support balance and rhythm
These elements helped participants understand how race walking combines strict technical rules with endurance and coordination.
Strengthening Theory Through Practice
All concepts practiced today beautifully reinforced the theory already completed in the earlier stages of the course. Participants were able to directly connect classroom knowledge to real movement patterns on the track, gaining a deeper appreciation for the technical demands of endurance events.
The Final Stretch
With only one practical day left, the commitment and enthusiasm remain high.
Tomorrow is the last practical day, stay tuned for the final update 🇦🇼✨
